You say he died for our sins: What does that mean?

Christians say that Jesus died for our sins. I have never understood this statement. It implies that our sins are absolved because if his death. But then those same people say "we're all born with sin". So... not only can you not commit any new sins, but your account is already in the red before you even get started. So... exactly which sins did he die for?
